A New Crime in Town: The ‘Smash and Grab’ Burglary

A national retail store chain recently reported a break-in at one of its stores in Florida. Apparently, burglars had smashed through the window doors, entered the building, quickly grabbed $35,000 worth of jewelry, and took off, before police could respond to the security alarm. Jewelry stores are perhaps prime targets, but thieves are not shy about robbing pawn shops, cellphone stores, clothing boutiques, department stores, computer shops, cigarette stores, vehicles, and even schools.

White-Collar Crime Punishment: Harsh or Lenient?

Legal experts have signaled that, over the past decades, the punishments for federal crimes have seen a significant increase in severity (far greater than what was meted out in the past) and even more so in fraud and money laundering cases.

We’ve all heard of the insanity plea before—a defendant claims that they are not culpable for the crime they committed because they were legally insane at the time [...]

Criminal Sexual Abuse on the Rise in Chicago

Sex crimes involving women and children have dominated Chicago headlines in 2013. From the track and triathlon trainer accused of sexually molesting a 16-year-old boy over a two-year period to the 81-year-old dentist charged with fondling a young girl in his office, Chicago newspapers abound in shocking examples such as the ones above.

According to statistics, the population of registered sex offenders has significantly increased in recent years, and the numbers just keep growing. A 2012 report by National [...]

Understanding Chicago’s Gang Enhancement Laws and Criminal Penalties

Gang Enhancement Laws

Gang enhancement laws in Chicago carry significant legal consequences for individuals involved in crimes connected to gang activity. These laws impose strict penalties when a crime is committed with the intent to further gang-related objectives or when a defendant is found to be a gang member. Gang involvement is addressed through specific criminal statutes that treat some gang-related activities as standalone serious offenses or conspiracies, often resulting in elevated charges and severe penalties.
