After being arrested for a crime, the accused may be upset, overwhelmed and anxious as they may face the possibility of having to go to trial to defend themselves. Complicated and bureaucratic, criminal court systems can be particularly confusing following an arrest, and it's in the accused best interest to secure professional legal representation to help efficiently and favorably guide them through it.

While not everyone who is arrested gets charged with a crime, for those who do, their case will be handled by a Circuit Court, also referred to as a Trial Court. If you or a loved one is facing criminal charges in Chicago, the Cook County Circuit Court will be in charge of hearing and deciding upon your case.

According to the Uniform Crime Report compiled by the Illinois State Police, about 50 percent of all crimes that occurred in Illinois last year were committed in Cook County. This shocking statistic makes it no surprise that Cook County also has higher arrest rates and larger volumes of criminal cases moving through its Circuit Court system. Consequently, there are a number of different court building locations – each with their own unique presiding judge – in which a case may be heard. The factor determining where a particular criminal case is presented will depend on whether the charge is a misdemeanor or felony, as well as the precise nature of the charge (i.e. violent crime, sex crime, property crime, white-collar crime).

The following table outlines the current (as of 2010) divisions, locations, presiding judges and types of cases of the various departments of the Cook County Circuit Court:
